Sabbath Coffee in Royal Oak

Sabbath Coffee in Royal Oak

The newest place to grab a cup of coffee in the Royal Oak/Troy/Berkley area is Sabbath Coffee. It opened about 6 months ago, and it’s already running circles around some of our favorite long-time breweries. The owners are passionate about their product, but they also know that not everyone is a coffee snob so they keep the menu and offerings approachable. Plus, many of their drinks are or can be made vegan.

Located at 24 E. 14 Mile, across from White Wolf Patisserie, it’s the first project from Tech & Mortar Hospitality Group, a new company run by local entrepreneurs Dennis Weiss and Jeff Bianca. Partners Trevor and Miranda Graham roast their own beans on site and serve third-wave drinks like the Draper (espresso, brown sugar syrup, orange bitters, cherry garnish).

Their menu features two or three seasonal items, as well as frozen lattes and cider. It also offers the typical drip options and has pastries from Cannelle by Matt Knio.

We tried a cappuccino and an iced coffee and were impressed by the bold flavor. The service was prompt, even on a Sunday afternoon. The small space has no indoor seating, but there’s a large alley with outdoor patio seating right next door.

We’ll have to go back and try some of their other seasonal drinks. And, of course, pick up a bag of their freshly roasted beans. Sabbath Coffee is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., daily, and you can place orders online or in-person at the counter.
